JCD is a
recognized Health & Safety Executive (HSE) First at
Work Facility.
All employers are required
by law to provide personnel to enable first
aid to be given to staff if they become ill
or are injured at work.
The are two levels
stipulated by the HSE, the ratios are
dependent on the category of risk of the
business and the number of staff employed :
A First Aider is
someone who has undergone a training course
in administering first aid at work and holds
a current first aid at work certificate from
a course approved by the HSE. First
Aid at Work is a four day HSE course
covering a wide range of topics, with a
minimum of 24 hours student / instructor
time. The qualification is valid for
three years. To remain current, a
First Aider must attend a two day Refresher
course, this can be done up to three months prior
to the expiry date of the qualification.
An
Appointed Person is someone who is
appointed to take charge when someone is
injured or falls ill, including calling an
ambulance if required, and also, look after
the first aid equipment
e.g.
restocking the first aid box.
Appointed
persons should not attempt to give first aid
for which they have not been trained.
Ideally, the person should have attended a
short basic emergency first aid course - Emergency
First Response is a one day
course coving basic primary and secondary
care.
Care
for Children is a one day course
covering basic primary and secondary care
specifically for infants to children under
the age of eight. This can be run
independently of Emergency First Response
for those only concerned with First Aid for
Children, or combined for those with
responsibility for adults and
children. The combined course will
last one and half days.
Paediatric
First Aid
is a two day course
covering the same basic skills and
information as Care for Children, but with
12 contact hours and additional information
on common children's ailments, it meets the
requirements for those working with
youngsters, such as childminders, and
nannies.
